About Our Gold Medal Virginia Sangiovese

If you don’t know much about wine, and are interested in knowing more, that understanding begins with learning more about the grapes themselves.

Sangiovese grapes are deep purple in color and originated in Italy.  They have a long history in the world of wine that dates back to at least the 16th century.  The name is derived from Latin and means “the blood of Jupiter,” and Sangiovese grapes are used in a wide range of red wine varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon and Pino noir.  Virginia Sangiovese wines often have the flavor of slightly sour red cherries with earthy aromas and typically feature high acidity.

Our award-winning 2016 Sangiovese is a medium-bodied wine with a fresh, fruity flavor, containing notes of raspberries, black cherry, plum and violet.  It won a Gold Medal at the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition, a Silver Medal at the Great American International Wine Competition, a Bronze Medal at the San Francisco International Wine Competition and took Best Red at the Fauquier Wine Competition.

We’re sure you’ll love our Virginia Sangiovese, but if red wines aren’t your passion, you should also check out our 2016 Estate Sauvignon Blanc.  It won a total of eight awards, including earning Best White at the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition and a Gold Medal from the INDY International Wine Competition.  It’s a superbly balanced wine with hints of both green apple and melon.

Or perhaps you’ll enjoy our 2017 Memories Vintage, which is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier with 1.4% residual sugar.  A crisp, well-rounded wine that presents aromas of honeysuckle and melon. It won a Gold Medal at the San Francisco International Wine Competition and took home a Bronze from the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition.  It’s sweet, crisp and delightful. Not to be missed!

Since we began production, our wines have won more than twenty-four thousand awards, so if you’d like to try our 2016 Virginia Sangiovese and other fantastic vintages, a wine tasting is a great way to do that.  If you’re interested in spending the day with us, please refer to our hours of operation below and plan your trip accordingly.
